International staff arriving in Jerusalem to begin an assignment often have a full checklist of logistics to manage — and vehicle rental documentation is sometimes left to the last minute. Understanding what you need before you arrive at the rental office saves time and prevents avoidable delays at the start of your posting.
The Essential Document Checklist
Valid passport
RequiredYour current passport with at least 6 months of validity. This is the primary identification document required by all rental companies. Photocopies are not accepted — the original must be presented.
International Driving Permit (IDP)
RequiredIf your home country driving licence is not in Latin script (Hebrew, Arabic, English, French, etc.), you will need an IDP issued by your home country's motoring authority. This translates your licence into multiple languages. Note: an IDP is valid only alongside your original home country licence — not as a standalone document.
Home country driving licence
RequiredYour valid national driving licence. Some rental providers require this to be translated or accompanied by an IDP if not in Latin script. Licences from most Western countries, the US, Australia, and most EU states are accepted without translation.
Credit or debit card
RequiredA credit card in the renter's name is typically required for the security deposit. Debit cards may be accepted by some providers. Confirm the accepted payment methods when arranging your rental.
Employment or assignment letter
SituationalFor NGO and embassy staff arranging long-term rentals under an organisational account, a letter from your employer confirming your position and assignment duration is typically required. This enables the rental to be arranged under your organisation's procurement account.
Organisation credentials (UN, NGO, Embassy)
SituationalStaff from UN agencies should carry their UN laissez-passer or staff ID. Embassy staff should have diplomatic credentials available. These documents may be relevant at checkpoints and are sometimes requested for organisational rental accounts.
Visa documentation
SituationalYour entry visa or permit for Israel, and if applicable, any documentation relevant to operating in Palestinian Authority areas. This varies significantly by nationality and assignment type — consult your organisation's security advisor if uncertain.
Minimum Driving Age
The standard minimum age for renting a vehicle in Israel is 21 years, with at least one year of licence holding. For certain larger vehicle classes (full-size SUVs, luxury vehicles), the minimum age may be 24 or 25. Confirm this when booking if age is a consideration.
Insurance Documentation for Compliance
For international staff whose organisations require proof of vehicle insurance before approving a rental, the documentation checklist extends to what the rental provider must give you:
- Insurance certificate explicitly naming coverage territory
- Confirmation of cross-border coverage (Areas A, B, C if relevant)
- Rental agreement in English or your organisation's working language
- Emergency support contact number
